With how the product is folded, I don’t know if you could ever get it to look flat or rug like, I wouldn’t recommend. Average quality.

This rug is EXTREMELY thin, and by that I mean it's so thin that it comes folded into quarters instead of rolled - and even while folded, it lays flat. There's just no stiffness or resistance to it whatsoever, and once you unfold it into its maximum size, it has creases everywhere from the folding. Someone else described the color as faded, and I agree with that, though I decided not to hold that against the manufacturer because after looking a bit closer at the photos, it's clearly intentional. If that's the look you're going for, it definitely comes through.With all that said, it's fine for my purposes - I put it down under a desk in the same room that has litter boxes in it. I end up switching that rug out frequently because I get paranoid that it's absorbing the smell, and with the desk and chair holding it down, the rug is fine. I will say, though, that the rug itself is too cheap for the price. The price is low-end but the rug is pretty much bottom-end, and I feel like you could pay just a little more and get something MUCH sturdier and nicer. This rug just is not going to last long and I can already tell that after the first cat puke I may have to throw it away because I can't see how it will be possible to clean something this thin. Just food for thought - I wouldn't get it again.
