The 100A unit is about 10% larger than a typical PC power supply. The fan pulls air from the AC cord side, pushes it through the unit and heatsink where it exhausts out the DC side. The unit fan can be a scoatch loud if it is out on an open test bench. I noticed no other noises or problems engaging DC before AC as the manual dissuades. I recommend getting a re-settable breaker on your DC side (I used a 150A breaker and it unavoidably becomes the hottest part of my circuit at >85A, nearly burning my hand in the 1st degree if squeezed).Nowhere in the documentation states the recommended wire, only that you should use at least 8awg. I initially ran my test setup with a 6awg until my 4awg and 2awg stranded wire came in. Unmolested 2awg (from my supplier) fit PERFECTLY into the screw-down terminals (be careful to spin the cable while inserting them as to not bind any strands). The 6awg got fairly hot at 85A (maybe 120F) whereas the 2awg barely warms at 85A.The 3-stage charging behavior is not explained well enough in detail. This is what I found: In 3-stage charger mode, when powered on, my unit would provide about 15A of power to my depleted batteries and need not engage the fan. (This would be perfect for certain shore power applications where you'd slowly charge up your battery bank.) The charger functions like this unless I had a load of about 575 watts or over 40A, in which case it would jump up to 85A supplied, fan engaged. So responding to the load is great if that is your use case. If you're like me and intended for the "shore power" to come from a generator then you want to load that generator as high as it will take for greater fuel-to-watts efficiency. It became necessary to switch to FIXED MODE.The FIXED MODE plastic screw dial is so sensitive, merely touching my screwdriver to it caused my voltmeter to bounce all over the place to set it to ~14.6v. The dial also cannot survive repeated adjustments without disintegration.The GOOD:I was actually able to witness about 96A going into my depleted 600Ah 12V batteries until the voltage crept up to the point where about 86A was the average over many hours. The unit in use was warm and the exhaust heat a bit warmer in 70F open air on a table. 2 awg fits!The BAD:The unit consumed 20 watts continuous from the wall at idle, no DC installed.Screw down terminals are a bad idea IMO.Since it supports all worldly AC voltage ranges and frequency, it should have a detachable AC cable (like PC power cables) so one can swap as needed.The manual should give scenarios like I stated about which use case would be preferred for the two modes.The manual should give expectations to various wire gauge sizes and power uses.CONCLUSION:I found the unit sticker to be really informative (just lacking the recommended wire gauge range of 8 to 2 awg. The manual is of some of the best I've ever seen on anything despite my aforementioned quibbles.I will consider getting another unit for even quicker charging of my battery banks particularly because the warranty seems helpful in a marine environment.They should engineer an included relay to get the idle power down. A resettable breaker or ON/OFF switch would be desirable.
